My Personal Battle with the Baby Weight & Getting Rid of the Bulge

February 21st, 2012

By Melissa Moog

I know there are many moms out there who are struggling to lose the baby weight or have kept the extra weight on for many years after having their baby. Admittedly, I am “that mom” who had her first baby, didn’t lose all the baby weight the first time and subsequently got pregnant with twins. Now, I’m stuck with losing all of the extra baby weight from two pregnancies, ugh!

All my life my weight has been like a roller coaster, up and down constantly. I’ve now reached the point where I’m disgusted with the way I look and feel. I think it’s the one major issue in my life that has always been a big chip on my shoulder. And it doesn’t help that my wardrobe consists of stretchy pants, big t-shirts and my go-to color is black aka the slimming color (wink).

So, a few weeks ago I decided to do something about it and started the Cinch Inch Loss Plan. I decided to try the program out because of my friend and fellow mom blogger, Sommer Poquette of Green and Clean Mom whose had great success with it. Sommer has lost 20.5 inches and 26.5 pounds since September 22, 2011!

So far,  in just a few weeks I’ve lost 6 total inches mainly in my middle section and I’ve been tracking inches lost as well as how my clothing fits. What I like best about the program is it allows me to grab healthy meals on-the-go while still eating a balanced meal every day. It fits perfectly into my crazy, busy life style as a mom and entrepreneur. Below is more information about why Cinch works to help you shed the weight. I have also shared all of the critical action steps I’m following daily.

The Science Behind The Cinch Inch Loss Plan:

Instead of creating weight loss from water and muscle like with most diet programs, the Cinch Inch Loss Plan works by helping to preserve lean body mass and promoting weight loss from fat. Preserving lean body mass also prevents your metabolic rate, or ability to burn calories, from dropping. The Cinch Inch Loss Plan provides products powered by the essential amino acid leucine. Recent scientific research indicates that leucine may play a special role in weight loss because it acts as a signal for protein synthesis in muscle tissue. As a result, leucine helps your body preserve muscle mass while you lose weight from fat. The Cinch program has undergone preliminary clinical testing that indicated positive results for weight loss, fat loss, inch loss, and preservation of fat-free mass.

Here’s what I’m doing:

  • Replacing two meals with a protein shake or bar and taking the Cinch 3-in-1 Boost Vitamin
  • Drinking 6-8 glasses of water
  • Eating a healthy, well balanced dinner (focused on lean protein and green leafy veggies)
  • Keeping my daily caloric intake at 1,200 calories
  • Exercising at least 30 minutes every day while allowing one rest day. I’m currently training for a 5k.
  • Tracking my food intake via LoseIt.com (a great iPhone App)
  • For support, I’m part of the Cinch Community and am able to share my struggles and wins daily in our Facebook group. I also have a fellow mom I’m exercising with weekly who helps me stay accountable and keeps me motivated (Thanks Pauline!) :)
If you’re interested in joining me and trying the Cinch Inch Loss Plan leave a comment here on our blog or email me at melissa@itsabelly.com. You can also call our office at 503-297-5326. Just make sure to leave your name, phone # and reason you’re calling. Here’s to a positive experience during my weight loss journey! I look forward to reporting some awesome results.

Birth Day Suit Maternity Feeding Frock Product Review

January 7th, 2012

By Melissa Moog, Itsabelly Baby Planners Founder

I have to admit I’m a sucker for pretty things and I love dressing up for special occasions. I am indeed a girly girl and proud of it! That’s why I immediately fell in love with Birth Day Suit Maternity’s Feeding Frocks. I so wished that I would have found Birth Day Suit Maternity before I gave birth so I could have worn their chic looking Kathryn Birthday Suit at the hospital instead of the traditional and ugly hospital gown.

From the photos alone I was enamored by how gorgeous the prints and styles were. Although breastfeeding may not be typically what you have in mind for a special occasion (ie. anniversary party, wedding event) I think every time you take that moment to nurture the bond with your baby to breastfeed it is most definitely a very special time. So, why not treat yourself by wearing something chic and couture that makes you feel really good while making the time with your baby even more memorable. Or better yet give a beautiful feeding frock as a gift to a relative or friend who’s just about to enter one of the most special times in her life – becoming a new mama!

So, we’re happy to share that for all of our followers Birth Day Suit Maternity is offering a special 10% discount off your purchase, details below.

Reasons I love Birth Day Suit Maternity:

  • Beautifully made with gorgeous prints and fabric
  • Stylish and Chic – not like your standard, drab breastfeeding wear
  • Easy access for breastfeeding
  • Makes you feel beautiful inside and out
  • Affordable at $44
  • Created by two savvy mompreneurs (I love supporting my fellow mamas!)
  • Where to Purchase: Shopping at Birth Day Suit Maternity

Not My Mama’s Breastmilk – My Personal Aha Moment About Breastfeeding & Milk Banks

November 19th, 2011

Breastmilk from a Milk Bank in San Jose, CA Delivered to My Home

By Melissa Moog

Five years ago I became a new mom to my daughter Isabella and all I wanted to do was feed her the best food that nature could provide which was my breastmilk. It turns out after a few months of trying while exhausting the various means to increase my production from a lactation consultant, Fenugreek to tea I was not able to breastfeed like I wanted to. This was an extremely emotional and physically trying time for me. I also felt like because I was a baby planner and living in a city (Portland, OR) with a huge breastfeeding population that the pressure I put on myself was tenfold. I was driving myself crazy on top of being sleep deprived as a new mom and also recovering from an emergency C. I followed my lactation consultant’s advice, nursed and pumped regularly and the amount of breastmilk I got barely measured 1 ounce! So, through this article I wanted to share my personal aha moment about breastfeeding and milk banks along with sharing my struggle of not being able to supply my babies breastmilk.

I remembered going to a Mommy and Me class at St. Vincent’s hospital and during the session a fellow new mommy told me she was bursting at the seams with breastmilk and she’d be happy to give me some of hers. Inside I was livid (hormones raging of course) and actually so offended that I drove home in tears. I was offended because I took it very personal that I couldn’t give my baby MY breastmilk and why on earth would I accept another mom’s breastmilk to feed my baby anyway. It was a totally foreign idea to me at the time, not only because the milk didn’t come from MY body but I also felt like there were health risks. In the end, I knew the other mom meant well but I really wasn’t emotionally capable of understanding her offer to help me at the time.

Well, let’s now fast forward to July 21, 2011 when my beautiful girl and boy twins were born. I promised myself I would try EVERYTHING possible from day one to breastfeed my babies even though I knew I had production problems from the last pregnancy. Please note it wasn’t just one baby this time it was TWO – I’m stubborn and there was no way I would let this stop me. I was also on bedrest for 3 months, had minor pre-clampsia, high blood pressure and to top it off I had gestational diabetes. Sounds like I was a big, fat mess, right?! Well, I was but still pig headed enough to try and feed my babies the best mother nature could provide regardless of the odds.

Our Twins Born on 7/21/11

When the twins were born I immediately held them skin to skin in recovery which I was very thankful for because I had a cesarean and was told that I may not be able to hold them right away. I was also able to breastfeed both babies in recovery. I had a lactation consultant come in that same day to help me learn how to breastfeed twins (not a small feat). A hospital grade breastpump was already set up in my suite. So, I was definitely determined to feed my babies MY breastmilk. Well, in the end because the babies were slightly premature (I carried them to 37.5 weeks) I was also able to get a prescription for banked breastmilk from my doctor and fed them with a syringe through finger feeding. Additionally, knowing that I might not be able to produce enough breastmilk by the time I got home we ordered banked breastmilk to be delivered in time for our homecoming. I was very thankful for this option!

I have to openly share that in the year before my twins were born I did my research on banked breastmilk and found out that donors are screened and tested before their milk is accepted. Banked breastmilk is also given to NICU babies that are seriously sick to help them survive. My personal perception of never EVER wanting to feed my baby someone else’s breastmilk did a complete 360 degree turn! It was my “AHA” moment five years later realizing that feeding your baby banked breastmilk was absolutely safe and really good for them. I embraced the idea that even though I couldn’t supply my babies breastmilk that as long as they were growing healthy feeding them banked breastmilk was the next best thing! It was also comforting to know through the milk bank that other mamas were willing to share a precious gift to keep my babies thriving.

Last year, Itsabelly actually helped raise money for North West Mother’s Milkbank by donating raffle items and connecting them with the local news station to bring awareness about their mission to establish a milk bank locally. Afterall, I had to get the breastmilk for the twins shipped from San Jose, CA and the thought that many mamas are donating their milk in Portland but its being shipped to a bank in San Jose, CA or Denver, Colorado was crazy to me! My hope is that this post will bring more awareness to the public that milk banks are so very critical to many sick babies survival and even the not so sick but premature babies like mine.

Announcing the Green Baby Product Winners of Itsabelly’s “Seal of Excellence” from ABC Kids Expo 2010!

October 25th, 2010

If you didn’t already know ABC Kids Expo is the premier juvenile products specialty show in the nation with more than 900 exhibitors – wow! Our team of dedicated Itsabelly baby planners scanned over one million square feet of exhibit space at ABC Kids Expo last week and vetted products for the best “green (non-toxic)” baby and mama products on the market to consider for Itsabelly’s “Seal of Excellence”.

As a company who services new and expecting parents our primary concern is reviewing the safest products that baby may put in her mouth, place on her skin or affects her air quality. These products were chosen because we believe they were made with the safest materials possible (and a few aren’t even officially on the market yet)! We are very excited to share our unique and comprehensive green baby product list with you!

Quite honestly, there were sooo many great products we adored but we chose our winners based on the following categories: use of non-toxic materials, safety, innovation, quality ,user friendliness and style. We have to admit that there was no way possible we could visit every booth at ABC but we did our best until our poor feet were tuckered out! And granted in the green/ non-toxic baby stroller and car seat category there are just a very few companies focused on this key feature so we consider them true gems in the industry! These companies have received our “Seal of Excellence” because they truly deserve it for all of their hard work, hooray!!

Please take a peek at our list and share your comments. If you have feedback or just want to give our list props by re-tweeting or posting – we welcome you to! Or maybe you have other products you want us to consider for our “Seal of Excellence” in 2011. Either way, we love hearing from you!

Stay tuned for more of our ABC faves in two more categories…”child safety” and “baby products we just plain old LOVE”!

Out of Hibernation & Diving Into My 40 Year Old Twin Pregnancy

    January 26th, 2011

    By Melissa Moog, Itsabelly founder

Well, I’ve been in hibernation like mama bear for the last three months and finally ready to share some really exciting news! I want to thank my inspiring friends Mary R., Alicia V. and my darling hubby for encouraging me to write about my journey so stay tuned for my regular posts. Here I am on my 11th week of being pregnant and need to catch you all up! Yes, it’s true and after three challenging years (more on this later) of trying to grow our little family we’re excited to announce we are pregnant with not one but TWO babies. Double the joy? Or might you say double trouble? Happy sigh…

Sometimes I think what the heck am I doing to myself? Here I am 40 years young (I feel OLD) and diving into a twin pregnancy! When my twins turn 10 I’ll practically be in a rocking chair (wink). Seriously though, the reality is I enjoyed a 15 year corporate HR career, got married in my early 30′s and became an older mom. And I know in society today we are seeing more older women become new moms later in life so thank goodness I’m not alone!

Actually, we’re very excited about our twin pregnancy and my hubby always wanted the magical number of three children (we already have one daughter who’s 4) so he got his wish. And I only have to be pregnant once! Too bad he’s not the one having to go through what I call “all day sickness” though. And who was the goofball that named it “MORNING sickness” anyway?  I have it through out the day and during the most inopportune times like when I’m trying to focus and get work done – ugh! When the “ALL DAY sickness” hits all I want to do is drag my big butt to bed, have pillows envelope me and put my feet up only to veg and watch some mindless reality crap on TV.

The exhaustion and hormonal surge during the first few months have been outrageous. I’d want to shut my eyelids by 2:00 pm and wouldn’t even change out of my PJ’s since all I wanted to do was sleep. And forget about making dinner for my family…this is the one daily chore that I’m still having a very difficult time doing because I have no energy or interest in food. I lost my cravings for even my most favorite junk foods like pizza…nothing sounds good except anything with ginger, anything citrus based (sour, tart), downing a hot cup of Earth Mama Angel Baby Organic Morning Wellness Tea and spraying Happy Mama Spray all around me! If I could eat that stuff I would!

So, if you’re pregnant and haven’t yet heard of Earth Mama Angel Baby’s products they truly help take the edge off your “all day sickness”. Honestly, cross my heart they saved me during my first few months! So, I’m curious what saved you from morning aka all day sickness? Do you have any suggestions you want to share with our readers? Please feel free to comment here.

Morning Sickness – Tips on How to Combat it Naturally & Drug Free

    February 7th, 2011

    By Melissa Moog, Itsabelly.com Founder

If you read my recent article I was venting about having morning sickness aka all day sickness so I wanted to share some quick tips on how to combat this icky feeling in your belly naturally and drug free.  I also want to thank all of our wonderful followers on Twitter and Facebook for sending in their tips. There is a link to our Facebook page below so you can take a peek at these tips too.

Keep in mind there are some cases where women need professional medical advice because their morning sickness is so severe and dehydration can be detrimental to the pregnancy. If you have a severe case it is important you consult with a medical professional such as your OBGYN as soon as possible.

First, what is morning sickness? In reviewing several definitions I found that the technical definition is stated as “nausea and vomiting of pregnancy”. In asking my doctor what causes morning sickness she informed me that no one knows for sure but some possible causes are:

    • A significant rise in the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). In women carrying multiples the hCG levels rise even higher.
    • A surge of the estrogen hormone
    • Sensitivity to scent. Many pregnant women have a heightened sense of smell which can cause them to be extremely sensitive to odors.
    • A sensitive stomach
    • You’re also more prone to having morning sickness: if you had it during your first pregnancy, you’re pregnant with twins or more, you have motion sickness, you’ve battled with migraine headaches in the past

Now let’s get on to the various natural and organic remedies that have worked for me and what other pregnant women have shared. Please note that you can purchase most of these items at a natural food store like Whole Foods.

    Natural & Drug Free Recommendations

Anything with ginger! Ginger if you didn’t know is an herb that helps soothe the digestive system. Items such as:

Earth Mama Angel Baby Organic Morning Wellness Tea – Organic herbal tea for queasy mamas

    Yogi Organic Ginger Aid Tea

    Ginger Capsules

Ginger Chews - try to avoid too much sugar but having these handy in your purse can be a life saver

Ginger Ale – try to find Ginger Ale with real ginger and no high fructose corn syrup

    Other Products:

Organic Preggie Pops or Drops - again try to avoid eating too much sugar but sucking on these for quick relief while you’re on the go are great!

Nutri-West Ortho Phosphoric Acid Drops- 60 cc

Rainbow Light Complete Prenatal Vitamin – a natural, food based prenatal vitamin which you can find at a natural food store like Whole Foods

Eat. Drink. – It is important when you’re pregnant to eat small snacks every 2-3 hours so you never let yourself get hungry and keep yourself hydrated (water is best) as this can cause nausea too!

Crackers – when waking up in the AM sitting up for a few minutes and eating a cracker can help settle your nausea

    Non-Food Products & Acupuncture

Happy Mama Spray - is virtual bliss in a bottle! A gloriously uplifting aromatherapy spray, it’s made only with pure essential oils and flower essences.

Bio Bands or Motion Sickness Bands (Sea Bands)

    Acupuncture

If you have a natural, organic, homeopathic or drug-free suggestion for combating morning sickness to share with our readers hot mentioned in this post please share your tips with us by posting your comment here!

What Causes Green Poop in Breastfed Babies

    February 25th, 2011

    By Joanie Whitman, Itsabelly Kansas

During the first months of life, I noticed my son’s poop changing from its regular yellow/brownish color to a green frothy poop. It came and went periodically with no reason that I could see.  I knew that there were many causes of a green stool and started to worry that he might have an infection.  In looking for an answer, I found several helpful resources that discussed multiple possibilities:

    • Jaundice (in the first few days of life)
    • Food sensitivity to Mom’s diet (usually causing mucousy/bloody stools, spitting up a lot)
    • Foremilk/hindmilk imbalance (usually causing a frothy, watery stool)
    • Intestinal virus  (usually causing a mucousy stool)
    • Mom’s medication

I began working my way through the list to find the most likely cause for my son.  In examining him, I could see that he was perfectly healthy and gaining weight well (VERY well!).  I was able to rule out everything but foremilk/hindmilk imbalance.

What, you ask, is a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance?  Well, it happens when the infant is receiving more foremilk than hindmilk, which can result in green stools.  In an interview for Baby Center, Vicky Pigott describes it this way:

If your baby’s stools are green and frothy she may be taking in too much lactose (the natural sugar found in milk), which happens if she feeds often, but doesn’t get the rich milk at the end of the feed to fill her up.

How do you fix a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance?    Thankfully, the answer is simple – nurse longer on one breast.  Foremilk is produced at the beginning of a feeding and is higher in milk sugar and lower in fat. It goes through the baby’s system more quickly and produces more gas. Hindmilk is higher in fat, digested more slowly and is less likely to cause gas. Sometimes, adjusting your breastfeeding technique can help.

Lactation consultant Janet Vandenburg explains that gas in babies can also be caused or aggravated by foremilk/hindmilk imbalances and a strong let-down.  Vandenburg describes the importance of letting the baby stay on the first breast until he is done and either falls asleep or lets go on his own.  This method of nursing, also called “block feeding,” can be done temporarily until the baby’s stool returns to normal.

I followed Vandenburg’s advice and tried nursing on one side, multiple times if necessary, until the breast had been emptied and then switching sides on the next feeding and repeating till the other breast was emptied. It can be a little painful setting up this routine because of engorgement, but you can feel free to pump to help relieve the pressure till the routine is established. It only took a couple of days to get this down and now no more green stools.

You may need to consult your physician if the green stools continue for longer than 24 hours after making the necessary changes to provide your baby with more hindmilk.  The source of the problem may be due to another cause.

Tips on How to Travel with Your Toddler & Baby on the Plane with Less Stress!

    March 25th, 2011

    Traveling With Baby

Guest Post by Yuen Chung, proud mama to Josie, 2 and Natalie, 6 mo

Whether you’re packing to take an end of summer trip or planning ahead for the holidays, knowing what to bring (and not to bring) on the plane can make a big impact on your flying experience. The TSA has clear guidelines for people traveling with children. This article will help you with all the tricks that only moms know about. I’m going to share tips on how to travel with your toddler and baby on a plane with less stress!

While I am no Amelia Earhart, I did take a roundtrip solo flight with my 2 year old and 6 month old from Portland, OR to Los Angeles, CA. Here are some general guidelines tailored to preschool age and under to make your trip go more smoothly.

    General guidelines:

    * Bring only what you can carry or comfortably fit into a handicapped bathroom stall (i.e., leave the giant stroller at home and utilize an umbrella stroller).

    * Have only one carry on bag per adult (that includes purses). Having only one bag decreases your chance of losing your boarding pass or leaving an item behind. I prefer a backpack with good outer pockets.

    * If possible, plan your departure time for when your kids are happiest.

    * Dress your kids (and yourself) in layers. The plane can get from intensely stuffy and hot to chilly.

Essentials to pack (yes, I fit this list all into one regular sized backpack):

    * A cloth sling (I use www.kangarookorner.com). My baby was slung during the security (sling does not need to be removed) thereby leaving my hands free to retrieve everything else. I prefer a cloth sling because it easily fits into a bag.

    * A plastic grocery bag (blowouts happen and you’ll need something to store the stinky outfit).

    * Backup outfits.

    * Gum (helps the toddler’s ears and keeps them occupied for a bit). Not a fan of gum? Gummy bears work as well. Organic lollipops do too (Trader Joe’s brand are great)!

    * Pacifier – if your baby takes it. If not (like mine), time your breastfeeding for takeoff or offer your breast even if it’s not time! (Note: since my baby breastfeeds, I have no suggestions on formula quantity but try organic if you can. Use your best judgment and bring extra individual 4 oz packets that are sold at Target).

    * Dry snacks (Cheerios, etc). If you’re going on a longer flight, consider bringing a Lunchable.

    * Diapers (for younger babies, plan for 2 diapers per hour that you plan to be traveling, which includes driving time, shuttles between gates, flying time, etc).

    * Wipes (work great for wiping hands and dirty trays).

    * A small baby blanket and one cloth diaper. The cloth diaper is great for helping with those blowout messes. I’ve found that changing pads just get too grungy and most can’t be washed properly.

    * One or two small books, a pen, some paper or small pad/coloring book.

    * A video player & a few DVDs (personal choice is my iPhone since it doubles as my phone). A portable DVD player works well, too, but is bulkier.

    * Headphones that fit well for your toddler.

There are pros and cons about taking a car seat onto a flight. It’s nice when baby can fall asleep in it. However, for the older child, kicking the front of the seat can be a problem. Usually, I check my stroller at the gate if I’m using my car seat stroller, or check it with luggage (car seats do not count toward your baggage limits).

Notice how nothing in my bag was for me? Ditch the magazine and book (you won’t have time or free hands for it anyway). Forget the latte. Traveling with kids means packing only the essentials to get you from one destination to another.

Do, however, bring a dose of good humor because you’ll need it to get you through those tough moments. Just remember that most other people on board have been in your shoes, or if they have no children, they have most likely tuned out all the crying hopefully!

How to Introduce Your Pets to the Arrival of a New Baby

    March 24th, 2011

    Pet_baby1

    By Melissa Moog, Itsabelly Founder

The Pacific Northwest is full of animal lovers, which reminds me just how many families include animals.  We have two yellow labs that have become Isabella’s favorite playmates.  As a new parent I was interested in learning how I could make the transition into life with our newborn easier on our furry friends.  So, here are some tips to help you introduce your pets to the arrival of a new baby.

Introducing your new baby to your current children takes planning and research, but don’t forget about your furry family members aka your pets.  There is a lot that can be done to help ensure the whole family enjoys this event to the fullest.  Below you can find a condensed list of the recommendations for things you can do before the baby arrives from the Humane Society that is echoed by parenthood.com.

    * Get your pet accustomed to spending less time with you.  Because your new baby will demand a lot of time and energy, you won’t be able to spend as much time with your pet.  A sudden, drastic decrease in attention coupled with frequent scolding of your pet after the baby comes home will likely stress your pet.

    * Ensure your pet has a close relationship with a family member besides the mother-to-be. That way, the pet can still feel loved and provided for while mom is busy with the baby.

    * Ensure your pets are current with their yearly exams, vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered.  Sterilization is particularly important because it tends to result in a calmer pet with less reproductive health issues.

    * Consult with your veterinarian and pediatrician to resolve any concerns you have around your pets and the baby.  Resolving these problems early will ease your mind and smooth the transition.

    * Ensure you have good control of your canine companion. Consider enrolling in an obedience training class with your dog if you have any specific issues or need better behavior.  Get help from an animal behavior specialist for any of the more difficult issues, for example a pet exhibiting fear and/or anxiety.

    * Train your pet to remain calmly on the floor beside you until you invite him on your lap, which will soon cradle a newborn.

    * Trim your pet’s nails regularly to minimize potential scratching.

    * Ask friends with infants to visit your home to accustom your pet to babies. Remember to supervise all pet and infant interactions.

    * Familiarize your pet with baby-related noises. For instance, play recordings of a baby crying or turn on the mechanical infant swing. Make these positive experiences for your pet by offering a treat or playtime.

    * Apply double-stick tape to the furniture to discourage your pet from jumping on the baby’s crib and changing table.

    * Block the entrance to the baby’s room with a sturdy, removable gate high enough to keep your pet from jumping over it. By doing this, you will teach your pet that the baby’s room is off limits.

    * Talk to your pet about the baby, using the baby’s name regularly if you’ve selected one.

    * Have your pet sniff baby’s blanket and toys so she becomes familiar with these new smells.

    * Plan ahead and make sure your pet is cared for properly while you’re at the birthing center.

    * Carry around a swaddled baby doll to help your pet get used to the real thing.

Probably the most common praise we receive for our book, Itsabelly’s Guide to Going Green with Baby, is that we offer parents down-to-earth, practical advice on going green affordably. Itsabelly Baby Planners believe that everyone feels good in a different shade of green and we work together to find the best lifestyle choices that match your unique shade of green. A common misconception is that going green takes big bucks. And it can be hard to think otherwise when you see the price tag hanging from the eco-friendly baby rattle or non-toxic baby bottle. Itsabelly Baby Planners work with their clients to find the areas where going green matters the most to the family. When looking at the whole picture of a family’s purchases for baby, we can find areas where we can go green on the cheap.

Our book covers the topic more in-depth, but we thought we’d give you a few sneak peeks and tips here in a series of “Going Green on the Cheap” blog posts. Our first post covers some tips to help you evaluate where to focus your greening efforts. First, really ask yourself what areas matters the most to you in making non-toxic choices. To make it simple, we advise our clients to focus on what goes into baby’s mouth, touches baby’s skin and what baby will smell.

    What Baby Eats

    • Once baby is eating solids, try to make homemade baby food. Not only will you save money, you know exactly what baby is eating. With a food processor and blender and a few ice cube trays (The Soft Landing has some fabulous non-toxic eating supplies.) you can freeze batches of baby food. Freezing baby food is also a great way to take advantage of seasonal fruits and vegetables and supermarket sales.
    • At least buy organic on the most pesticide-laden items like dairy and produce. Avoid the “Dirty Dozen” of the fruits and veggies with the most pesticide residue and choose from the “Clean Fifteen” instead. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has a full list of fruit and vegetable rankings.  Download their convenient wallet guide or iPhone App.

    What Touches Baby’s Skin

    • Avoid nasty chemicals in diapers and use an eco-friendly diapering system, such as cloth or hybrids like gDiapers.
    • Before buying skincare products, check the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetics database to discover the toxicity of the product’s ingrediens.
    • Beware of skincare products with perfumes. “Fragance” on an ingredient label is often the hiding spot for toxic chemicals.

    What Baby Smells

    • Before you paint the nursery, consider using a low to zero-volatile organic compound (VOC) paint to avoid toxic chemicals that cause respiratory, skin and eye irritation, muscle weakness and other serious ailments and diseases, such as cancer, according to the EPA.
    • Many household cleaners contain toxic fragrances and chemicals to clean and shine your home. Use concentrated non-toxic household cleaners. Better yet, make your own! You will be amazed at what a little white vinegar, water and baking soda can achieve. Download this product and recipe guide for non-toxic household cleaners from the Washington Toxics Coalition.
    • Baby will spend most of their day sleeping (hard to remember when you are up at 3 AM, but it is true). Consider splurging on a non-toxic mattress so baby isn’t inhaling the off-gassing chemicals found in many traditional mattresses. Healthy Child has an informative guide about toxins in mattresses. We like Naturepedic, Pure Beginnings and NaturalMat.

My Personal Pregnancy Experience with Cancer, Artificial Insemination & In vitro Fertilization

    April 13th, 2011

By Melissa Moog, founder of Itsabelly

After three long years of trying to conceive in November of 2010 we finally got the news we were expecting not just one baby but two! Randy (my hubby) and I couldn’t have painted a more colorful picture of how we finally reached pregnancy nirvana! Ok, maybe it wasn’t total nirvana especially with my 24/7 nausea but we were extremely happy! I wanted to write this post to share my very personal pregnancy experience with Artificial Insemination and In vitro Fertilization because I know there are many women who have gone through something similar or have a unique story about their pregnancy.

In 2008, Randy was diagnosed with cancer (Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma) and at that time our daughter Isabella was two years old. This was the most devastating news we had ever gotten and needless to say the next few years were challenging. We had just started to try for a second baby but after finding out Randy needed to go through chemo for six months we had to try alternative means. You see, chemo doesn’t bode well with what your body is supposed to produce naturally when you’re trying to conceive. Put it this way we had to freeze what I like to call “liquid gold” before Randy’s chemo started! So, we dove into the world of Artificial Insemination (AI) and In vitro Fertilization (IVF). BTW, Randy’s cancer is in remission now and he’s doing great (thank God & whew)!

To make a long story short we tried AI once and it didn’t take. Then we tried AI a second time during Portland’s huge snow storm but were totally snowed in that we couldn’t drive down to the clinic – that morning we lost what I called the golden tube of miracles. After this ordeal we went down the path of IVF – tried that once and after spending a lot of dough, being subjected to a lot of injections and a painful extraction of my eggs we still didn’t get pregnant!

It didn’t help that after implanting three embryos and losing them my doctor said “all three of your embryos looked strong and we thought at least one would have taken”. That was probably the icing on the cake after hearing we weren’t pregnant for a third time, argh! As if this news wasn’t bad enough five months later we find out my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer. At this point I thought to myself that everything happened for a reason. I knew I wasn’t pregnant because I needed to be completely available to care for my mom during her illness. The good news is my mom’s cancer is in remission now too and she survived her therapy! But I have to tell you as a supporter of two cancer patients in three years its been a very tough road – surviving through it all is really about having a village of support, strong faith, hope and being resilient when you’re down!

So, now it brings me to the present – fast forward a year…we try IVF again…more money, more glorious shots in the stomach and butt AND drum roll we FINALLY get the news we’re pregnant with TWINS (boy & girl to be exact)! Randy and I jumped for joy and did our happy dance. I also cried tears of joy of course because afterall I am completely bursting with hormones at this point. I’m now 22 weeks pregnant and as BIG as a house! It’s getting harder to move around and I can’t sit down too long without having to stretch. I can only eat small meals every two hours or I’ll feel sick but overall I’m happy and over the moon with our pregnancy!

If you have a similar story or something unique about your pregnancy please share it with me by commenting on our blog. I’d love to hear about your experiences. Getting pregnant and giving birth to a baby is truly a miracle. It is something we as women should all be very proud of no matter how we got there! We have such a special gift to carry life. I feel very blessed to be able to share my personal story with you and truly believe in happy endings – thank you for listening!

Stay tuned, my next article will be on the differences between Artificial Insemination and In vitro Fertilization.

Going Green on the Cheap & Figuring Out What Baby Gear You Really Need

    April 22nd, 2011

By Jennifer LoPrete, co-author of Itsabelly’s Guide to Going Green with Baby

First, Happy Earth Day and we’re celebrating by sharing valuable tips from our Green Baby Guide! As part of Itsabelly’s series on Going Green on the Cheap, today we would like to focus on figuring out what baby gear you really need. New clients often tell us how they feel overwhelmed by the amount of baby gear on the market. Walking down the aisles of Babies R Us is enough to make your head spin. And of course, everything from a bottle warmer to a binky holder and the thousands of baby “essentials” in-between are all labeled as a “must have.” But are they really? How can a new parent know what they really need to buy and what they can forgo? Even experienced parents can get stuck into a trap of thinking they need to buy a bunch of new baby products. Itsabelly Baby Planners developed a checklist to help parents simplify and focus on products essential to their lifestyle choices. A brief version of the list can be found on page 200 of our book, Itsabelly’s Guide to Going Green with Baby. The checklist is part of our chapter on Reducing, Reusing and Recycling Baby Gear.

Itsabelly’s Guide to Evaluate Baby Gear Needs

    • Do you have space for the item?
    • Do you have an existing item that would work as well as a new item or that can be repurposed to serve a new purpose? For example, can a spare dresser be revamped to serve as a baby dresser? If you have an empty closet, could closet organizers and baskets work instead of a dresser?
    • Does the item have more than one purpose? Can your dresser be used as a changing table as well? Or can you attach a changing table onto an existing dresser? Sturdy storage baskets can have a life beyond storing diaper cream and diapers.
    • Will you be abe to resell or hand down the item? If you are planning on more kids, will the item withstand multiple uses? Is the product well made, so you can hand it down to a friend or sell it later at a consignment shop?
    • Can you wait until baby is born to test the product? We particularly recommend waiting on entertainment purchases, such as a swing or exersaucer. Take baby over to a friend’s house and see if baby likes these items before buying. Some babies dislike the movement of a swing or confinement of an exersaucer, while for others the swing is the key to peaceful naptime.

If you would like an Itsabelly Baby Planner to help you simplify your baby gear purchases down to the essentials to save you money and time, please contact one of our Baby Planners across the country or contact our main office. We have a more in-depth checklist and detailed survey to assess our client’s needs and advise the best products to match our client’s lifestyle.

Maternity Concierge & Baby Planner Industry Growth

    May 31st, 2011

Windy (Seattle), Melissa (Portland), Czari (HQ) - Our Baby Planners at ABC Kids Expo in Vegas

Since 2006, there have been a handful of companies who decided to help new and expecting parents through the overwhelming world of having and caring for a new baby in the areas of baby registry/baby gear consultation, nursery set-up, child proofing and other services. This field has officially defined itself as the Maternity Concierge and Baby Planner industry which has seen a tremendous amount of growth over the years and especially over the last few months from recent media exposure related to the new Bravo show Pregnant in Heels.

Itsabelly Baby Planners is a pioneer in this niche who has seen the industry grow from its infancy since 2006. We are excited to be part of this growing industry and honored to be in touch with hundreds of aspiring maternity concierge/ baby planners through our Baby Planner 101 Teleseminars, Baby Planner in a Box Consultations and a continuous blast of phone/email inquiries. We are also proud to be members of the first global trade association for Baby Planners and Maternity Concierge, The International Baby Planner Association (IBPA).

Prior to launching our businesses as a Maternity Concierge or Baby Planner most of us were already offering our services free of charge to pregnant family members and friends. As an example, we assisted them through the overwhelming task of  plowing through big box baby stores to help them sort through an ocean of baby products or set up their nursery. Some of us have gone through our first pregnancy experience with no one around to help other than books, on-line websites and maybe a doula or midwife to guide us. In the end, we have one primary thing in common and that is the desire to share our knowledge by empowering, guiding and supporting expecting couples who want the assistance of a baby planner professional.

You might wonder who in the world would hire a Maternity Concierge or Baby Planner and after successfully running Itsabelly since 2006  I can honestly share actual profiles of our typical clients. First, as baby planners we have a small niche market that we cater to and we know that our services will not be attractive or necessary for everyone. However, our clients can range from a pregnant woman who is on bed rest and needs someone to help set up her baby registry and/or nursery, a busy career oriented couple who works 50 hours a week, expatriates who have entered the USA from another country, parents going through the intense process of surrogacy, IVF or adoption, and couples who only want help in one specialty area like multiples coaching or child proofing. These are all unique circumstances but are very typical of the clients Itsabelly works with.

If you are expecting or a new parent and interested in learning more about how a Maternity Concierge or Baby Planner can help you through your pregnancy or parenting dilemma Itsabelly is here to help! Additionally, on the business end if you are an aspiring Maternity Concierge or Baby Planner and need some guidance on how to get started in this new industry Itsabelly can help you too. If you are looking for a baby planner in your city check out The International Baby Planner Association’s Premier Membership List.

Our next free “How to Become a Baby Planner 101” teleseminar  is June 1st at 5 pm PST/8 pm EST via phone for 45 minutes. To sign up please email us at info@itsabelly.com or call 503-297-5326. You may also email us to be placed on the waiting list for our next available class.

Tips on How to Design Your Baby’s Nursery

    July 1st, 2011

    Our color palette

    By Melissa Moog

Preparing for a new baby’s arrival can be overwhelming and on top of that becoming a new mom or dad can be very stressful. There will be many things you have to think about before your little bundle arrives. With that said I think one of the most enjoyable moments of pregnancy is being able to design your baby’s nursery and seeing your creative ideas come to life. To help get you started in the right direction I wanted to share some important tips to consider when designing your baby’s nursery.

When I was deciding what our twins nursery would look like our interior designer, Julianna Verboort from Best Dressed Nest asked me to think about the following:

    1. Inspirational pieces that trigger a theme
    2. Color palette

I came up with Isabella’s (my 4 year old) art pieces which she made at Summer Camp, an elephant mosaic and flower. Both included the blue color palette and one of my favorite colors aqua/turquoise. Additionally, we had just taken a family trip to Maui and were inspired by the Hawaiian Beach theme so needless to say the aqua color and elements of the ocean truly inspired me to go with an ocean, beach theme. I think there’s also so much more meaning in your design when you can use pieces that inspire and/or have a special meaning behind them. In our case Isabella’s artwork were put to good use and not to mention Big Sister was able to feel like she was an important part of designing her siblings new nursery.

    Isabella's Art Pieces of Inspiration

    Julianna Verboort, Our Interior Designer

So, by using Isabella’s art pieces  Julianna helped me choose the most appropriate paint colors by having me review various swatches. We were able to see how the colors would reflect against the carpet. After choosing the colors we painted test samples on the wall in order to make sure we picked the best colors. Julianna also suggested we paint the ceiling a different color from the walls which was a new concept for me and in the end would bring another dimension to the room. We also decided to do a window covering which would add softness and texture to the room.

One very critical element we worked on during this initial design phase was laying out the room with nursery furniture and taking measurements to make sure the pieces used fit appropriately in the space. With twins especially we needed to make sure two cribs could fit in the space.

The essential furniture pieces for your baby’s nursery:

    1. Crib
    2. Dresser/ Changing Table
    3. Area for Storage
    4. Glider or Rocking Chair
    5. Accessories/ Textiles (valance, bedding etc)
    6. Lighting

So, after you have figured out your inspirational pieces, color palette and furniture layout its time to get the real work done! My next post will show the before and after photos of our twins space and the steps taken to finish the nursery.

I know personally that I couldn’t wait to see the finished room. It was really exciting to see the room come to life with Julianna’s interior design work each day. In my mind I knew that having the twins nursery done would make the idea of their arrival into the world so much more of a reality as their beautiful new space awaits them!

Go GaGa’s Slide Tote and Diaper Bag Visits Maui

    October 5th, 2011

    By Melissa Moog

One word (ok, maybe two words) to describe Go GaGa’s Slide Tote is eco-fabulous because it’s stylish, ergonomically made, eco-friendly and practical while keeping a parent’s and baby’s needs in mind! I took my Go GaGa Slide Tote to Maui this summer and used it on the plane to hold my 4 year old’s snacks, my big water bottle, a book, lap top and other traveling essentials. This is exactly why I love my Go GaGa Slide Tote because I can use it as a travel, business and diaper bag – so versatile which allows me to get maximum mileage from my investment!

It was easy to carry my Go GaGa Tote around because it wasn’t bulky and extremely comfortable to wear over my shoulder while traveling (especially during my pregnancy with twins). The cleverly designed shoulder strap is the primary reason wearing the Go GaGa  Slide Tote is so effortless!  The strap distributes the weight of the bag across your back and shoulders, so it won’t slide off or cut into your neck. And we can’t forget to mention their totes are great for the planet! Go GaGa’s recycled totes are made from 72% post consumer recycled fabric by a fair trade certified manufacturer in Vietnam. Now, don’t all of these features make you wanna go ga ga?!

Eco-friendly & Cloth Diapering Alternatives to Disposable Diapers

    October 13th, 2011

    By Melissa Moog

Cloth & Eco Friendly Diaper Line-up for My TV Segment

Last week I did some research on eco-friendly and cloth diapering alternatives to disposable diapers for my TV segment on Fox12 (video link provided below). I have to say it was a ton of fun reviewing so many cute options for baby’s bum! Cloth diapering has definitely come a long way since Grandma’s diapering days! From hybrid, all-in-ones to pocket cloth diapering there is bound to be a solution for any novice cloth diapering parent! Our Itsabelly’s Guide to Going Green with Baby is also a great resource sharing cloth diapering tips on how many diapers to stock, list of brands, accessories and go-to resources.

Below I share the various types of cloth diapering styles you can consider. This short list is by no means in any particular order nor does it come close to listing every brand available. So, I encourage you to do your research and find out what cloth diapering style you like best by ordering a sampler kit as shown here on My Precious Kid . And personally, if there’s two key tools that will save you from icky messes and possibly get your hubby involved I recommend you use a flushable liner and invest in a multi-use spray wand!  If you’re in Portland, OR or looking for an on-line store who carries cloth diapering products I’ve shared a great list below!

Video Link: Eco-friendly & Cloth Diapering Alternatives

First, here’s some quick diapering facts from The Real Diaper Association:

    • Real Diaper Association estimates that 27.4 billion disposable
diapers are consumed every year in the U.S and will sit in our landfills for 250-500+ years
    • 50 million diapers end up in the landfill every day
    • Families using disposable diapers will spend $2500-3000 diapering one child, compared to $500-600 using modern cloth diapers.
    • Modern cloth diapers are dioxin free, often organic, are free of harsh chemicals and perfumes – unlike their big brand disposable counterparts.
    • Over 300 pounds of wood, 50 pounds of petroleum feedstocks and 20 pounds of chlorine are used to produce disposable diapers for one baby EACH YEAR

    Cloth Diaper Options:

    1) Hybrid Diaper

    gDiapers
Convenience of disposables with some of the re-usability of cloth diapers.
You can have the flexibility of a disposable diaper with a 100% biodegradable gRefill, or opt for reusability with super soft and trim-fitting gCloth inserts. gDiapers are plastic-free, elemental chlorine free, latex free, and perfume free.

    2) All in One/ All in Two Cloth Diapering

    a) GroVia is a modern, one-size diapering system. Its unique, waterproof shell and organic cotton soaker pad minimizes waste and cost. When the soaker pad is wet, simply replace with a fresh, dry one! Just featured on Fortune 500 Inc. as one of the fastest growing co’s.

    b) Bum Genius – One-size diaper w/ adjustable snaps and attached liner, velcro closure . Adjustable absorbency and stay-dry inside, water proof outside.

    c) bitty d’lish – Ultimate in fashion & trim diapering, with the one piece design, snap closure. Very easy to use – no extra pieces to fold, stuff or snap in.

    3) Pocket Diaper

    Fuzzi Bunz
One of the most adjustable diapers through elastic with snap closure. Uses absorbent inserts.

    4) Wrap (used with a cloth insert or fitted diaper)

    Bummis
A nice, snug, waterproof wrap is an integral part of every 2-piece diaper (1 insert or 1 fitted diaper + 1 wrap = a 2-piece diaper).

    5) So, if you don’t want to jump into full fledged cloth diapering right away here are some baby step options into eco-friendly diapering. Better for baby’s bum and mother earth!

    a) Diaper Service - To minimize the work you have to do on cleaning try a diaper service like Tidee Didee.

    b) Eco-friendly Diapers – Don’t want to go cloth but want safer/non-toxic option free of nasty chemicals try Seventh Generation or Nature’s Babycare. They are free of chlorine processing, fragrances, latex and petroleum-based lotions protecting baby’s sensitive skin.

    c) Broody Chick Diapers - 100% chlorine free, hypo-allergenic, fragrance free, diaper is fully compostable & proven to compost in 90 days!

NoseFrida: An Amazing Alternative to the Bulb Nasal Aspirator

    October 14th, 2011

by Joanie Whitman, Itsabelly Kansas City

It’s inevitable – with winter colds comes the snot. I used to reach for the traditional bulb aspirator whenever I saw it building, but it was always a battle to use and never really seemed to extract much mucous. There’s also the worry of causing more damage by cramming it into the nasal passage and irritating those sensitive membranes. The strong bursts of suction can cause the nasal lining to swell, making it even harder for baby to breathe. Not to mention how impossible they are to clean . . .

But have no fear – there’s a great alternative to the traditional bulb aspirator called the NoseFrida. I read a great review about it by Thingamababy and decided I had to give it a try. It turned out to be a wonderful product that I would highly recommend to anyone wanting a much more effective replacement for the old tired bulb aspirator. Its hose system uses your own suction to extract excess mucous from the baby‘s nose without even being inserted into their nasal passage. So the worry of causing harm is gone. I know what you’re thinking – but don’t worry, there’s a filter that keeps any snot from reaching your mouth

The NoseFrida does an amazing (and I mean AMAZING) job of pulling out more mucous than I ever thought possible. At first, I found myself straining to create enough suction, but with practice I’ve become good at mustering enough lung power to successfully remove any and all snot from baby’s nasal passage. I do find that using a little saline spray can be helpful in releasing thicker mucous.

As for cleaning the NoseFrida, it’s actually possible and very easy. The cigar shaped body of the aspirator comes apart and can easily be rinsed with warm water. No more germ filled aspirators sitting around. I bought replacements filters, but the filter can be rinsed with water and reused multiple times.

After switching to the NoseFrida, we’ve been able to keep a common mucous-producing cold from moving into baby’s lungs and becoming a more serious infection. This is an excellent, natural way to help our baby recover quickly and stay healthy during the winter season. And to top it all off – the Nosefrida is even made from #5 polypropylene plastic which is free of BPA, PVC and pththalates.

TEN THINGS PARENTS CAN DO TO MAKE HALLOWEEN SAFER

    October 26th, 2011

    By Melissa Moog

Halloween is right around the corner and as we prepare our kids costumes, stock up on treats and attend all of the traditional events like going to the pumpkin patch or attending parties it’s very important to remember to keep our children safe while they trick or treat. Itsabelly not only cares about keeping children safe from dangers in the home by child proofing and decreasing toxic exposure but also wants to share important tips on how to keep children safe from predators. The Ten Things Parents Can Do To Make Halloween Safer written by The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) below is a great reminder of the simple things you can do to keep your children out of harms way.

As I prepare for my five year old’s night of trick or treating I received these valuable tips from her school written by The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) about how parents can keep their children safe. If you find this article helpful please forward or re-post the information where ever you see fit. Thank you!

Article Written by The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC)

TEN THINGS PARENTS CAN DO TO MAKE HALLOWEEN SAFER

Halloween is one of the most exciting times of the year for children, but sometimes the most hectic for parents. Nearly 94 percent of children between the ages of four and twelve participate in Halloween activities each year. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) reminds parents to take a moment to consider basic safety precautions that will make Halloween a safer night of fun.

CHOOSE bright, flame-retardant costumes or add reflective tape to costumes and candy bags so children are easily seen in the dark. In addition, carry a glow stick or flashlight.

PLAN a trick-or-treating route in familiar neighborhoods with well-lit streets. Avoid unfamiliar neighborhoods, streets that are isolated, or homes that are poorly lit inside or outside.

NEVER send young children out alone. They should always be accompanied by a parent or another trusted adult. Older children should always travel in groups.

ALWAYS walk younger children to the door to receive treats and don’t let children enter a home unless you are with them.

BE SURE children do not approach any vehicle, occupied or not, unless you are with them.

DISCUSS basic pedestrian safety rules that children should use when walking to and from houses.

CONSIDER organizing a home or community party as an alternative to “trick-or-treating.”

MAKE sure children know their home phone number and address in case you get separated. Teach children how to call 911 in an emergency.

TEACH children to say “NO!” or “this is not my mother/father” in a loud voice if someone tries to get them to go somewhere, accept anything other than a treat, or leave with them. And teach them that they should make every effort to get away by kicking, screaming and resisting.

REMIND children to remain alert and report suspicious incidents to parents and/or law enforcement.

“Child safety is important year round, but Halloween is an especially important time for parents and children to pay extra attention to their surroundings and not let their guard down,” said Nancy McBride, National Safety Director of NCMEC. “It is important that parents exercise a few basic safety precautions to help ensure that Halloween is both fun and safe.”

About the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Since it was established by Congress in 1984, the organization has operated the toll-free 24-hour national missing children’s hotline which has handled more than 2.3 million calls. It has assisted law enforcement in the recovery of more than 128,750 children. The organization’s CyberTipline has handled more than 600,000 reports of child sexual exploitation and its Child Victim Identification Program has reviewed and analyzed more than 14,750,000 child pornography images and videos. The organization works in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice’s office of Juvenile of Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

Natural Massage for a Gassy Baby

    October 28th, 2011

    By Joanie Whitman, Itsabelly KC

Shortly after the birth of my second son, he started having issues with gas and cramping. He would writhe and cry out in pain. Many times, there was no consoling him and we’d be up most of the night trying to figure out what to do to help ease the pressure and give him (and me) some peace. So I started to research alternative ways to deal with this problem.

I found that gas pains can be caused by many things:

    • Immature gut
    • Feeding position
    • Breastfeeding mother’s diet, including supplements
    • Air bubbles taken in during feeding
    • Hyper-lactation syndrome: a very abundant milk supply means a larger amount of foremilk causing a forceful letdown; too much foremilk can make baby’s stomach cramp, creating more fussiness
    • Over-stimulation

I considered the many possibilities and addressed the most likely for our situation. First, I tried nursing him in a more upright position with his head above his stomach. I pulled my leg up to support his body on the same side he was nursing. This seemed to help, but didn’t completely get rid of the gas.

Next, a friend recommended the Happi Tummi waistband. It’s a great product that definitely eased his pain and calmed him enough to sleep. But he continued to struggle periodically with painful gas.

So I continued searching for another solution and found an article in Today’s Parent by Jill Vyse, president of the Canadian chapter of the International Association of Infant Massage, that explains how to massage the baby’s stomach to help release gas.

“First, cradle your baby’s head and make eye contact,” she says. “Let your baby know that you’re here to help. Then gently lay your hand on the soft part of the baby’s belly. You can probably feel the tightness or distension from the gas.”

After a few seconds, Vyse suggests using your fingers to make a paddlewheel-type motion on your baby’s belly, from the bottom of his ribs towards his groin. “Think of it as scooping a little hole in warm sand on the beach,” she says. Repeat this two or three times, then rest your hand on the baby’s belly again. At this point, he may pass gas or lift his knees up towards your hand. If your baby lifts up his knees, use your hand to support his legs and wait a few seconds to see if he passes gas.

Following this, Vyse recommends letting your baby’s legs stretch out again, and using the pads of your fingers to draw a clockwise circle on his belly. “Start at 12 o’clock, in a straight line with the baby’s chin, and draw a circle all the way around. What you are doing is following the shape of the baby’s colon,” Vyse explains.

She suggests doing this two or three times and then pausing, with your hand resting on your baby’s belly. “See if the baby is crying a little less,” she says. “Or if he’s still crying, perhaps he’s moving his body less and is a bit calmer.” At this point, help your baby bring his knees up to his chest again – often he’ll release more gas.

Vyse encourages parents to do this gentle massage three times a day – “two times when the baby is not really upset and once when he’s really gassy. The best time is about half an hour after a feeding and when the baby is in a quiet, alert state.”

This technique has worked wonders for us! I do the massage for my son several times a day, and he will often pass gas immediately, giving him instant relief. Of course it’s not a guarantee that these methods will work every time, but it’s wonderful to have an arsenal of gas fighting tools to calm the baby’s tummy!

When Is Spending More on Organic Produce Worthwhile?

    October 31st, 2011

    by Joanie Whitman, Itsabelly KC

The Environmental Working Group ranked 47 different kinds of fruits and vegetables for the amounts of different pesticides found on their surfaces. EWG warns that there’s a growing consensus among scientists that even small doses of pesticides can cause lasting damage to human health and should especially be avoided in kids and pregnant moms. That’s why Itsabelly believes that spending more money on organic produce when you can is very worthwhile. Here are some quick resources which describe the fruits and veggies to avoid because of the strong exposure to pesticides.

EWG created a handy pocket guide and even offers an iPhone app that lists both the “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean 15″ for easy grocery shopping.

    Childproofing for the Holidays

    December 2nd, 2011

by Joanie Whitman, Itsabelly Kansas City

As a child proofer in Kansas City and while this festive time of year approaches, it’s important for me to share new safety concerns that may arise for families with young children. Although decorations and a trimmed tree are part of the holiday traditions, they can pose a risk to young children. By taking a few precautionary measures you will be able to rest easy knowing your child will be enjoying this Christmas season and creating specials memories along the way.

    Childproofing tips:

    • Securely attach breakable ornaments high on the tree out of the reach of children while only using paper or large plastic ornaments on lower portion of tree
    • Candles should be kept out of the reach of children at all times
    • Since poinsettias are not poisonous choose them over mistletoe (mistletoe berries are)
    • Pass on the table cloth and runners. Young children pull on them sending hot food and tableware flying
    • Unstable Christmas trees pose tip-over risk. Securely position your tree in stand and attach to the wall using durable twine and cord cleats for extra safety.
    • Wait till Christmas Eve to put presents under the tree. Torn wrapping paper and ribbons can pose a choking hazard
    • Keep small objects, such as hard candy or nuts in candy dishes, where younger children can’t get them.
    • When visiting family survey the house for safety concerns. Look for open stairs, uncovered outlets, unlocked medications and household cleaners within reach.

Physical harm such as choking on decorations or playing with the outlet where Christmas lights are plugged in are not the only concerns.  Surprisingly, toxic chemicals like lead in PVC trees and lights also play a big role in creating an unsafe environment too.

    Choosing a Safe Christmas Tree

Most artificial trees are made from PVC plastic.  Not only is PVC loaded with toxic chemicals, its production also results in emission of dioxin and ethylene dichloride.  And to top it off, lead is often used as a stabilizer in PVC to make artificial trees more resistant to light and weathering.  Lead has been linked to kidney, liver, neurological and reproductive system damage.  Some Christmas trees are even required to carry warning labels because they shed lead-laden dust, exposing children to the toxic chemical.  Many artificial trees are also treated with flame retardants.  But that’s necessary for our safety, right?  Well not always – even the treated trees can still catch fire.

Real trees make the perfect substitute for a PVC tree.  Worried about allergies?  Go with fir and spruce varieties which do not contain irritating resins.  Fresh trees are a natural, renewable, reusable, recyclable source, and just think – you’re supporting US farmers and local businesses when you buy live Christmas trees.

If you’d still prefer to go with an artificial Christmas tree, be sure to choose one made from polyethylene (often labeled with “PE”) that hasn’t been treated with flame retardants.  If you find a PE tree you like and it has been treated, confirm with the manufacturer if the flame retardants non-halogenated, as they are considered much less toxic.

    Locating Lead-safe Christmas Lights

Toxic chemicals are also found in Christmas lights.  Most are made from PVC and lead is specifically chosen as the main stabilizer in the PVC casing used on the electrical wiring because of its flame retardant nature.  There are other substitutes like zinc and boron, but they are more expensive and not readily available.

The Ecology Center tested 68 Christmas light sets and found that 54% of the products contained more than 300 parts per million of lead in PVC encased cords and light-bulb sockets – a level higher than the CPSC’s standard for lead in children’s products.

Lead-safe lights can be found on rare occasions here in the U.S. and will be certified as RoHS compliant which monitors the levels of toxic chemicals allowed in electrical products.  Most RoHS compliant lights are also LED which is great, but more expensive. We found many options at Environmental Lights (look for their commercial strings that begin with the letter “C” or choose from their retail strings, icicle lights and nets).

Lead doesn’t like to stay bound in the PVC cord casing, so it sloughs off and ends up on hands and in little mouths. So if you’re unable to invest in RoHS lights this year, just be careful to keep Christmas lights out of reach of your little ones and use gloves while decorating your tree – especially if you’re pregnant. Also keeping dust around the tree cleaned up and off of presents will go a long way in protecting your family.
